Mental health matters — May is mental health awareness month 2014

May is mental health awareness month 2014, and we are teaming up with other mental health groups and advocacy organizations to raise awareness and banish stigma around mental health issues of all kinds. Good Therapy is one blogging partner and a fantastic resource for finding referrals to local therapists and other readings on mental health topics.

This month they are sponsoring a “blogging because mental health matters” awareness campaign and Psyched Magazine is joining in to support and be a part of it. Mental Health Awareness Many of our posts in May will have a special focus on raising awareness and banishing stigma around mental illness, emotional health, and therapy. Please start by reading Marla Cass’ three-part series “On Choosing a Therapist” and Kishi Fuller’s very practical guide to finding your calm in a crazy world, “Simple Tools for Inner Peace”. Look for more posts oriented to raising awareness around mental health throughout the month of May, as Psyched Magazine welcomes new writers on topics like, “Surviving Mother’s Day when Your Mother is Not in Your Life” and Marty Cooper’s “Working with Depression Everyday Through Inner Choices.”.

We welcome feedback and all comments! As Good Therapy’s May Mental Health campaign  points out, “There may be many reasons a person does not seek or receive help for his or her mental health concerns, but stigma is one of the most common. One of the main objectives of Mental Health Awareness Month is to reduce the negative stigma sometimes associated with mental health challenges and therapy.” We could not agree more.
